The Learning Design Process

  • 1. Set Vision & Goals

    We start with a simple question - WHY this learning experience? What is the purpose? What will be different after the experience? In this stage we articulate our Vision (North Star), and understand both desired Program Objectives and Learner Outcomes. Setting up for success also includes understanding operational constraints such as budget, time, space, etc.

  • 2. Understand Learner Needs

    Perhaps the most important factor in a successful learning experience is ensuring relevance to learners and their needs. Using Empathy methods from our Design Thinking toolbox, we can adequately prepare and tailor learning experiences to diverse needs.

  • 3. Creating the Learning Arc

    If the Vision & Goals are our North Star, think of the Learning Arc as the map that will get us there. This is where we establish the overarching narrative that tells the story of the journey learners will embark on together, along with building the scope and sequence. (Scope: The depth at which learners engage in content, Sequence: The order in which learners engage in content).

  • 4. Session Design

    Great Session Design has:

    • The right amount of Content appropriate for cognitive load delivered through memorable frameworks and storytelling

    • Methods to center practice through reflection, critical analysis, dialogue, design, and play

    • Embedded Culture-Building Strategies to promote belonging, connectednes, and generative conflict

  • 5. Preparing to Facilitate

    In this phase we train-the-trainer and support Facilitators in feeling confident to deliver the sessions. This can include learning foundational skills in the art and science of facilitation, all the way to role playing and practicing delivering complex sessions.

  • 6. Reflection & Assessment

    In this final stage, we review feedback from Learners and collect insights from Facilitators & Program Leaders. This phase informs future continual learning opportunities for the cohort and inform future design of the program.

1:1 Advising

    • You’re looking for surgical advice focused on 1-2 phases of the Learning Design Process (see above)

    • You have rapid-fire questions for an adult learning expert

    • You’d like a second pair of eyes to review and provide feedback on existing materials.

  • $200/hr (email me to request sliding scale)

Done-For-You Design

  • You’re a subject matter expert with content that you’d like to convert into an engaging learning experience.

    Potential final deliverables include Session Design, Custom Brand-Aligned Frameworks & Graphics, Virtual Courses, Playbooks, Website/Resource Hubs, or Interactive Collaborative Boards (Miro/Mural).

    1. Book a free Intro Call 📞where we’ll discuss your desired final deliverables, timeline, and state of current content/materials.

    2. If the project is feasible, I’ll follow-up with a proposal and quote. I request a signed contract and 50% deposit to begin work.

    This offering includes 3-8 hours (depending on scope) of additional collaboration time that can be used in the following ways:

    • Kick-off call to discuss content strategy

    • Strategize on unique content creation needs (video, lessons, facilitator/participant materials)

    • Mid-point review to test out prototype and provide feedback

    • Strategizing on engagement metrics, marketing, delivery

    Additional coaching and advisement will be billed at $150/hr

Co-Design Experience

  • You’d like to work 1:1 or help a group move through phases of the Learning Design Process.

    This offering is booked as custom workshop design and I offer discounts for packages.

    • Up to 2 hours of preparatory and logistics calls

    • Workshop preparation time & custom materials (~2 hrs per 1 hr of workshop time)

    • Facilitation of workshop

    • Up to 1 hour post-workshop reflection call

  • This series takse place over 5-8 short sessions.

    $10,000-$16,000

    Inquire for non-profit pricing. Additional fees for in-person facilitation with travel invoiced separately.

    1. Book a 60 minute Intro Call 📞 and tell me more about your Group and the Purpose you’d like to achieve with your gathering.

    2. If the project is feasible, I’ll follow-up with final quote, contract, and request for 50% deposit up front.

    3. I send agenda and draft materials for review 1 week in advance of the scheduled date.
